Presented by David Painter, PhD for Faculty Day of Scholarship
This presentation explores how students at a U.S. college integrate AI tools into their academic lives, focusing on the ethical implications and best practices for incorporating AI into curricula. Drawing on Kolb’s experiential learning model, the research surveyed 1,162 communication majors and found that while most students used AI tools like ChatGPT for unethical purposes (e.g., cheating), those who had taken AI-integrated classes reported more ethical uses and more critical engagement. The study identifies key ethical concerns about AI in education, including academic integrity, data privacy, and bias. The session will outline best practices for AI integration in college classrooms, suggesting that educators reformulate learning goals, encourage critical thinking, and provide personalized feedback to foster ethical and active learning.
